Wii-itis

Since Christmas is fast approaching it seems that this is another year that the Nintendo Wii will be one of the hottest selling toys. This is a great device since it allows adolescents and adults alike to actually get up and move around while they play their video games, as opposed to sitting in a stationary position for extended periods of time. With constant movement you will actually be utilizing calories and getting a workout which is much healthier to a person then being sedentary.  The Wii is a breakthrough since it is becoming an epidemic problem that children are becoming more and more unhealthy as a result of becoming inactive.

The problem that can occur with the Wii is similar to that of any thing that is done too often. Overuse and repetitive stress injuries can occur as a result of doing the same motions over and over again.  Shoulder injuries, Elbow injuries and wrist injuries are commonplace with people that play for long periods of time.  Simple precautions that can be done to prevent these problems include:

1) A warm-up to the body that will allow adequate blood flow to the regions of the body being used.  If you start playing vigorously while your body is cold, this can lead to problems.

2) Taking a break every 15-20 minutes to allow some rest to the areas being used.

3) Stretches before and after playing.  We will detail these stretches in next months newsletter.

4)  Knowing your own limitations.  If you start feeling pain in any areas, STOP playing!  The idea that it is so fun that you must continue is absurd.  If something does not feel right, chances are that something is not right.
