As the end of the summer approaches, many people are returning from vacations and families are thinking about back to school. Dr. McKay, on the other hand, is looking forward to finishing off his training for Ironman Canada and finally doing the race. If you have been following along in his blog, you will know that it has been a challenging year, which will hopefully payoff when he does the race in Penticton, BC on August 30, 2009. This year, he has decided that he wanted to raise money for a cause and chose the BC Arthritis Society. In this issue, we will cover some details about this condition that is seen daily in our office.

arthritis
Did you know there is more than one type of arthritis? In fact, there are more than 100 types of arthritis, a condition that affects more than 46 million U.S. adults -- a number that's expected to swell to 67 million adults by the year 2030.
There are two major types of arthritis - osteoarthritis, which is the "wear and tear" arthritis (see sidebar), and rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory type of arthritis that happens when the body's immune system does not work properly |

levator scapulae
The levator scapulae is a large muscle that originates in the medial shoulder and attaches to the cervical spine. When this muscle is irritated it can create headaches, shoulder pain and/or cervical spine pain. Those individuals who are typically presenting to us with a levator scapulae strain are those who work at a computer, under stress, cyclist and body builders. |

The levator scapaule muscle is one of the most common muscle strains we see in our office. It is common to people that work at computers for a living and individuals under stress (is it no wonder we see this a lot!)

| thank-you! |
As the end of August approaches, and Ironman Canada nears, we would like to say thank you to all of you for the support, especially to those who have made a contribution to the BC Arthritis Society. If you haven't yet made a contribution, it is not too late. You can still make a donation. Every little bit helps. Thanks!
