frequently asked questions
Below are some common questions asked in the office. Please feel free to ask any questions you have regarding the office and/or treatment.
Do I need a referral?
No, doctors of chiropractic are primary care practitioners. Just like your MD, a referral is not necessary. We do try to work with your other health care practitioners when possible.
What should I look for when choosing a chiropractor?
An individual you are comfortable being around and with whom you feel will listen to you. A good practitioner will not only listen to your needs, but will work with you to get better, whether it be give you some home stretching to perform in between visits or to work together with other complementary practitioners to get you on your way to recovery.
What should I do to prepare for my visit?
The front desk staff will tell you what is necessary. In general, loose fitting clothing is best. If you are coming in for an injury, it is good to be able to recall when/how it happened so the doctor will be able to assess your injury appropriately.
Does the chiropractor 'crack' my bones? Does anything break?
After a thorough examination, the chiropractor may suggest a manipulation is appropriate. Nothing gets broken - the noise of the manipulation is nitrogen gas in the joint.
How is chiropractic different from physiotherapy/massage?
Chiropractors are specifically trained to work on the spine.
Can I be hurt?
Although it is very rare, an injury is possible, and a thorough exam and history will greatly reduce the risks.
Why do chiropractors want me to return after I already feel better?
A return visit may be necessary to follow up on the injury. Although you may feel much better, it is likely that the tissues are still damaged and need further care.
I think I have the same problem as my friend, will it take the same number of visits to fix my problem?
Each person heals differently. Some variables that dictate how we heal are age, physical fitness, occupation and severity of the injury. After a thorough exam, the doctor will be able to give a rough estimate of recovery time - though it will depend of how one responds to treatment and his/her lifestyle.
I'm pregnant - can I still be treated? Is it safe?
Yes. Chiropractic care is very safe and effective during pregnancy. Please let the doctor know you are pregnant so they can use the appropriate equipment/table that is designed for pregnant individuals.
What can a chiropractor treat/fix?
Typically chiropractors treat the spine or the articulating joints.
Why is it important to have chiropractic check ups?
With our active lifestyles, it is reasonable to make sure our spines are functioning at their best. This is similar to when we get check ups by our dentists.
How do handle ICBC/WCB plans? What info should I bring? What it the procedure?
If you have experienced a motor vehicle accident or workplace accident and are seeking ICBC or WCB to cover some of your costs, we will need your MSP Carecard number, the date of your accident, your claim number (if you have it) and the name/telephone number of the person you were dealing with at ICBC/WCB. We will attempt to contact the appropriate insurer to confirm if they will cover your costs. Until that point we will collect the full fee for your visit, then reimburse you once coverage has been confirmed.
Do I need x-rays before I come in?
No. Typically the chiropractor would prefer to do an exam and then determine if x-rays are necessary. If you have recently had x-rays done relating to your injury and either have the x-rays, or report, it may be helpful during your initial visit, but is not mandatory.
My friend went to a chiropractor and s/he needed to come back for several visits and still didn't get better. If I don't get better will I need to come forever? What are my options?
No. The chiropractor should be giving specific time lines and markers to help you determine your progress. This will vary from patient to patient depending on the severity of the injury. For example, the chiropractor should provide a time frame for a reassesment. At this time, a improvement in pain, muscle tightness and ranges of motion should be present. If there is no improvement, the chiropractor should suggest a change in treatment plans. The chiropractor may also suggest another complimentary health care practitioner to help at that point. Circumstances vary between individuals - it is best to discuss your unique condition with your chiropractor.
Does MSP cover chiropractic care?
For those on premium assistance, MSP covers a portion of the visits. MSP will only cover 10 visits total per calendar year, inclusive of chiropractic, massage, physiotherapy, naturopathy and podiatry.
Does extended health cover chiropractic care?
Yes. We are not aware of any plans that do not cover visits to the chiropractor. Each plan varies in its extent of coverage, you will need to check with your employer to find out the extent of coverage.
