Back to School - Backpack Safety
 |
There are currently a lot of guidelines as to proper usage of backpacks for children but it is also important to explain why backpacks should not be too heavy. As a child grows, his/her skeleton has yet to become mature, meaning that growth is still occurring. It is important to try to grow in a position where the spine is not comprimised. When a backpack becomes too heavy, a child has the tendency to lean forward because if he or she were to lean back, gravity would pull them on towards their bums. In order to counteract this, a person will bend forward to support the new weight. However, once the spine is tilted forward, the body has a tendency to want to adapt to the position it is in. This is especially bad when growing since the spine has the ability to adapt to whatever position it is in. If a child is constantly slouched forward then plastic or permanent changes may occur. So with that in mind please keep within the appropriate weight limits in preventing future spinal problems. |
