Common Condition
Quadratus Lumborum (QL) Strain

The quadratus lumborum (QL) is a very large structure that requires consistent stretching.  The QL is involved in most activities of the lower back, especially lifting.  As with most muscles, the QL will shorten when strained and this creates a tension on the vertebrae that the QL attach to.  It is not unusual to have a QL straining with either lifting and rotating with heavy or awkward articles.

Treatment

Chiropractic care is often the answer to a QL strain since the QL's attach to the vertebrae.  The patient can assist in the recovery with ice and home stretches.

Stretch
: QL Side Lying
Lie square on side.

Push upper body up keeping the hip on the floor to feel a stretch on the down side.

Avoid rotating the upper body.
