Athlete of the Month
Linda Hilts

Linda Hilts is not just a mother and UBC staff member.  She is the backbone of the E-Venti Marathon and a long time marathoner.  Linda does several marathons each year and seldom misses a Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday training run with the Steveston Athletic Association.

Linda shared a few of her training and life secrets with us:

You are an avid runner, and doing the Boston Marathon in April, 2008.  Why did you start running?

I work at UBC and basically was getting bored with sitting around on my lunch break.  Pacific Spirit Park is at my door step so off I went trail running.

What is the best moment/moments you have had as a runner?
To do well in a race when I least expect it.  Winning my age group in the 2006 Richmond Flatlands 10k came as a pleasant surprise and, of course, qualifying for Boston.  Overall, it's the good friends I have made over the years with distance running .

How many miles do you log in a week?
Anywhere from 15 to 35 miles.

Have you had any injuries as a runner?

Many from the mundane (sprained ankle) to the depressing (fractured bone in my foot).

You are involved in the organization of the Richmond E-Venti Marathon, what  was the total raised and what was the monies raised for?

We haven't yet tallied up for the recent 2008 E-Venti Marathon, but last year we donated $5,000.00 to the Richmond Public Library to support children's literacy.

For when is the E-Venti planned for next year?

We are planning for Sunday, March 1st , 2009.
