cycling helmet drive
Dr. McKay travels to Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) once every 4-6 weeks. The RCMP in that community are trying to encourage the use of helmets when cycling. They run a program called "Bike Smart Project" that promotes injury prevention, biking safely, road rules and theft prevention to elementary school-aged children.
This year they have teamed up with the Brain Injury Association of Canada and are not only encouraging the children to use helmets, but their parents/caretakers as well. This will, in turn, set an example for the children and increase usage. Due to financial constraints, many cannot afford to buy a new helmet. Precision Health has teamed up with the Haida Gwaii RCMP in an attempt to provide those less fortunate with good used cycling helmets. After watching a film and attending a talk about the importance of using a helmet and injury prevention, each participant will be given a helmet if they don't already own one.
If you have a used helmet that does not fit your children or you just don't like the look of you old one, please consider donating your helmet to this program. Donations will be accepted up to May 18, 2010 in both the Richmond and White Rock locations.
The Steveston Athletic Association and Speed Theory are also on board with the donation of old helmets.

pregnancy and chiropractic care
During pregnancy there is a release of hormones that encourage ligaments to relax. There is also an increase of weight and distribution of the weight. All of these factors can force the spine and pelvis to misalign.
Chiropractic care is safe for both the fetus and the mother during pregnancy. Soft tissue work is also essential during pregnancy to diminish the spasms and spinal stress.
Precision Health has a pregnancy pad that allows the mother to lie on her stomach during visits, for a more comfortable adjustment.

tennis ball stretch
Sometimes a stretch is just not easy to do, like during pregnancy. Periodically Dr. McKay will advise rolling on a tennis ball to help loosen the muscles. The tennis ball is usually easily available and less aggressive than rolling on a harder ball. This stretch can be done at the buttocks, as well as the lower or mid back.

new locations on haida gwaii
For those of you who visit us in Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), and haven't been in for awhile, we have moved locations in Masset and Queen Charlotte City. In Masset Dr. McKay now works in the Physio room in the Masset hospital, and in Queen Charlotte City he is in the Physio room beside the hospital.

new fee structure
When we first introduced Active Release Techniques into our practice, we kept it as a separate treatment from the regular chiropractic adjustments and had a separate visit fee. As the years have passed, we have found that Active Release Techniques are increasingly being incorporated into each treatment, and are becoming more integral in overall care.
We have decided that, instead of having a separate fee for Active Release Techniques and chiropractic treatment, we will incorporate the two fees and have one standard fee regardless if one or both methods are administered. This is being rolled out in conjunction with a fee increase that we have not implemented since 2007.
